Meet the team
Emma Scrivener
Movement has shaped Emma’s whole life. She began taking it seriously with a degree in Dance Theatre which brought her into teaching inclusive dance in the community and performing with a touring professional dance company.
When she found CrossFit and Olympic weightlifting in 2012, Emma discovered another side of performance, one built on strength, resilience, and community and fell in love again.
Across her career Emma has coached CrossFit at CrossFit Plymouth and Motion Training in Surbiton, run Plymouth Barbell Olympic weightlifting club, competed nationally and internationally in weightlifting (earning a European Masters bronze in 2025), and taught PE, dance, and CrossFit Kids in schools.
All of these experiences have grown and shaped Emma’s vision for Coastal Fitness.
“This isn’t just a gym, it’s a place for confidence, connection, and community. A space for every body to discover what they’re capable of".”
Tim Scrivener
Tim brings a wealth of experience to Coastal. After 18 years in the military, 10 of those as a Royal Navy Physical Training Instructor, he’s coached everything from boxing to CrossFit, taught rock climbing and mountain biking, and was even a founder of the RN Weightlifting association. He’s represented the Royal Navy in cross country, triathlon, cycling, and weightlifting, and spent time as a Health & Wellbeing Advisor.
But before the Royal Navy? He toured the world as a Royal Marines Musician proof that Tim’s journey has always combined discipline, performance, and passion.
With a Sport & Exercise Science degree and decades of coaching and leadership, Tim’s focus is on continuous improvement and helping people believe in themselves. His coaching style is thoughtful, empathetic, and all about making fitness simple and accessible.
At Coastal, Tim will be supporting the operations of the gym and is most excited about building a community where people can expand their skills, improve their health, and have fun while doing it.
Toby Scrivener
Toby has been training in CrossFit and functional fitness for over 10 years. Fitness has been a defining part of his life, and stepping into a coaching role is the natural next step in his journey.
Toby is passionate about sharing the knowledge and experience he’s gained. His goal is simple: to help others reach their full potential, build confidence, and enjoy the process along the way.
As a firefighter, Toby understands how powerful fitness can be beyond the gym walls. His training has helped him stay strong, mobile, and resilient in high-pressure, real-life situations, from work to sport.
After overcoming a major ACL injury, Toby knows what it’s like to rebuild both physically and mentally. His determination and structured training played a huge role in his recovery, and he brings that same mindset to the people he coaches.
With his calm energy, encouragement and genuine passion for helping others, Toby is here to support you every step of the way. His goal? To help you move better, feel better, and live better, in and out of the gym
